Centro on Locust has been the default downtown Des Moines milestone-birthday restaurant since chef George Formaro opened it in 2002, and it has held that position by simply not getting worse. The dining room is loud in the right way, the wood-fired pizzas and house-made pastas are still the best in the metro, and the bar program leans classic without feeling stuffy.
The private dining setup handles seated parties up to about 40 with prix-fixe menus that the events team builds around your group's preferences and budget. Smaller celebrations can request a reserved table in the main dining room, which keeps you in the energy of the restaurant rather than tucked away. Servers are trained to handle birthday moments without making them awkward, and the kitchen will quietly send out a candle and dessert plate if you tip them off in advance.
